The martensitic hardened process of carbon and alloy steels are by heating to austenitizing followed by cooling at the appropriate rate . The steel is tempered after the martensitic transformation . THe tempering is the process which consist of reheating the steel to an secondary temperature . The micro-structural have been changed in the process tempering this is to relieving internal stresses and improving toughness.

THe rapid quenching of carbon and alloy is to prevent the nose of the isothermal transformation curve is depending ont the alloy content , predominatly of the carbon content . The steels harden ability is measure by the maximum thickness of whole hardening or the profundity to which an alloy will harden .

THe another transformation for austenite during cooling is pearlitic transformation . Some of the steel may transform to pearlite instead of martensite if the cooling of austenite is not quick enough . The martensite is harden than the pearlite but the steels properties of pealite are fairly good and it is used in many application such as construction applications , horticultural applications , and industrial applications .

Some of the heat treatment like austempering , at the process of this treatment steel are left to austenitized followed by quickly quenching to prevent the austenite to peralite . The steel is sustain at temperature below temperatures those boost Pearlite formation and above the Martensite start transformation range  . The austenite transformation to finished bainitic microstructure is supported at this temperature   . THe purpose of austempering is to obtain gain of malleability or notch toughness at high stiffness levels , or to reduce the feasibility of fracture and distortion that will occur when traditional quenching and tempering .

A certain of steels have been manufacture that are strengthened by age rigidification . These steels are heat handle to dismiss some component in the steel into solution followed by cooling . Soon afterwards these steels are age stiffness to deposit the ingredient in few favor grain size and distribution .
